What is the Difference Between Way and Gang Switches?

“Way” and “Gang” switches differ in function, whereas a “way” is the number of places to control light(s)/device(s) from (multiple control points), whereas a “Gang” indicates there are multiple switches mounted on one plate in addition to defining an arrangement for different devices placed together into groups. A “Way” Switch (is used frequently in stair wells and hallways) allows control of multiple devices (light sources), and most importantly functions at greater distances than other types of switches. “Gang” switches indicate how many switches are arranged together (i.e. 2-Gang Switch controls two separate lights). Both “Way” & “Gang” terminology is essential for creating a configuration/layout for lighting systems in residential & commercial structures.

What is the distinction between a GANG and a WAY?

The word “gang” relates to the number of switches installed on a switch plate. For example, a 1-gang switch consists of one switch, while a 2-gang switch consists of two different switches mounted on the same plate. Each switch in the gang arrangement can operate a separate device. A “way,” on the other hand, relates to the number of points from where the circuit or light can be controlled. A 1-way switch will operate from one point and a 2-way switch will allow control of the same light from two different points usually located at two ends of the hallway or stairs.

Understanding the Structure of Gang and Way Switches

The way in which gang and way switches work greatly relies on their constructed design.

  • A gang switch creates a configuration of switches allowing to operate several devices, each switch wired separately for the control of the lights. The structure of the gang indicates the number of separate circuits which can be managed from one plate.
  • A way switch operates in a more complex manner. A 2-way switch actually consists of the connection of two switches operating as one and controlling a particular light. A 3-way switch with three switches provides control over the same light and is commonly applied in spacious areas for achieving better control of the lighting.

3 types of gang switches

  • 1-Gang Switch: This is the basic kind of gang switch that has only one switch on it that controls one circuit.
  • 2-Gang Switch: A 2-gang switch has two switches on a single gang switch plate that controls two separate circuits independently.
  • 3-Gang Switch: A 3-gang switch has three switches on the plate and can be used to control various lights and appliances of a room.

3 Types of Way Switches

  • Single Pole Switch: A single pole switch is used to wire a fixture from one location. This switch is one of the most common types.
  • Two Pole Switch: The two pole switch allows control of a fixture from two locations, and is typically found in large hallways and staircases.
  • Three Pole Switch: A three pole switch allows multiple switches to control the same light at the same time.

FAQ

What is the Meaning of Way in Light Switches?

In the case of light switches, “way” means the number of switches that control a single light source or circuit. Hence, the term “2-way switch” means that the light can be controlled from two locations.

What is the Meaning of 3 Gang 2 Way Switch?

A 3 gang 2-way switch means that there are three switches on the switch plate that can control a light source from two locations. Essentially, it combines a number of control points with multiple circuits.

What is the Distinction Between Standard Switch and a Two-Way Switch?

A normal switch can only operate a light from one selected location while a 2-way switch can operate the light from two different positions, hence used for efficiency in larger sized rooms.

What is the Difference Between 2-Way Switch and a 3-Way Switch?

While a 2-way switch can operate a light from two locations, a 3-way switch can operate it from three locations.
