Three mechanisms on the 80 × 121 mm face, stacked. The horizontal three gang plate needs 121 mm of clear wall; this one needs 80 mm and 121 mm of height, which is what a door reveal usually has.
In apartments the wall between the entry door and the corridor return is often 90–110 mm wide. A three gang plate belongs there — entry, hall and living — and the vertical face is the only format that fits without moving the door.
Height becomes the variable instead of width. A 121 mm tall plate set at 1000 mm to its centre clears a 90 mm skirting and a standard architrave head, but the set-out needs checking on site rather than assumed from the plan.
One box, one cut-out, three switched actives. Splitting the same three circuits across two plates costs a second box and a second chase for no practical gain unless the circuits genuinely leave in different directions.

Open-plan apartments put three lighting groups at the entry door: hall, living and kitchen. The wall beside that door is usually the narrowest in the unit, which is exactly where a 121 mm horizontal plate refuses to go.
FS306-V keeps all three circuits on one plate by using the tall edge. The rockers run top to bottom, the box stays in one place, and the entry wall keeps a continuous plaster line instead of a plate that laps the architrave.
Three situations repeat. A door reveal narrower than 125 mm; a corridor return where the plate would sit within 50 mm of the corner and look wrong; a tiled splashback where the tile set-out was fixed before the switch positions were drawn.
In all three the vertical face solves the geometry without touching the electrical design. The one thing it does not solve is cable volume — three two way gangs in one box is a lot of conductor, and the box needs to be sized for it at first fix.
Horizontal plates are forgiving of height because the rockers are all at the same level. A vertical three gang is not: the top and bottom rockers are 80 mm apart, so the plate has to sit where both are comfortable to reach, not where the middle one looks right.
Practically that means setting the plate centre around 1000 mm rather than the 1200 mm often used for a single switch, and checking the bottom rocker against any bench or upstand below it. The dimension guide gives the plate heights for the whole range.
Three gang plates are tested gang by gang on the finished face, because a rocker that binds after clipping is the failure that batch sampling misses. FS306-V goes through the same line as the horizontal three gang plate.

Yes. Each gang has its own two way mechanism and can be wired as a single-location switch. The box depth has to suit whichever combination you order, because the strappers on the two way gangs are what fill it.
No. The box and the fixing centres are unchanged. What changes is the margin between the plate edge and the box opening, which is roughly 5 mm a side, so the cut-out has to be square and the plaster intact around it.
