Entry, hall, living and balcony is a four circuit pattern that repeats across apartment buildings. It lands on the narrow entry wall, and the vertical plate keeps it there instead of pushing a plate onto the corridor side.
Four rockers span 100 mm vertically, so the plate has to be set for the top and bottom rocker at once. Centre height around 1000 mm keeps all four inside a comfortable reach envelope; 1200 mm does not.
Four switched actives, a feed, an earth and up to four pairs of strappers is a full box. On a vertical four gang the box is the specification that fails first, not the plate.

The entry wall of an apartment is where the most circuits meet the least plaster. Four lighting groups is normal; 121 mm of clear wall is not.
FS308-V puts the four gangs in a vertical stack, so the plate occupies 80 mm of width and buys back the 41 mm that would otherwise overlap an architrave or a corner bead.
Two horizontal two gang plates need 242 mm plus a gap and two boxes; one vertical four gang needs 80 mm and one box. If the wall is narrow, the choice is not close.
If the wall is wide, the horizontal four gang is usually the better buy — it sits lower, reads more conventionally and is easier to reach across. Vertical is a response to a constraint, not an upgrade.
A four gang vertical plate spans about 100 mm between the outer rockers. Set at the 1200 mm used for a single switch, the top rocker sits near 1250 mm — reachable, but above the comfortable band for shorter users, and well outside the 900–1100 mm range used in accessible design.
Set the centre near 1000 mm instead and all four rockers land inside it. Check the bottom rocker against any bench or upstand before fixing the height.
FS308-V is assembled and function tested gang by gang on the finished face. With four mechanisms on one carrier, a rocker that binds after clipping is the failure that matters, and end-of-line testing catches it.

Only if the whole plate falls inside the 900–1100 mm control band, which a 121 mm tall plate allows when centred near 1000 mm. Check the outer rockers specifically; a plate centred at 1200 mm puts the top gang outside the band.
