A dimmer in a vertical plate is usually an installation decision rather than a preference. FS328-V puts a 400W dimmer and a switch on the vertical FS plate, for the narrow wall or the column where a horizontal plate would overhang.
The 400W rating is the dimmer’s capacity, not a promise about lamp count. LED loads behave differently from incandescent ones, and the driver compatibility of the lamps is what decides whether the dimmer works smoothly at low levels.
The plate is the same acrylic face and the same colour range as the horizontal FS range, so a vertical dimmer does not read as a different product line in the room.
Start with the total wattage of the lamps on the circuit and compare it with 400W. Then check the lamp type: incandescent and halogen loads are straightforward, while LED loads depend on the driver and on how many lamps are on the circuit.
Low LED loads are the common problem. A dimmer rated at 400W may still flicker or drop out when only a few watts of LED are connected, because the minimum load matters as much as the maximum. Confirm the lamp and driver combination before specifying.
If the plate also needs a fan or a second circuit, the FS329 fan controller is a separate product rather than a second function on this one.
Dimmers are the part of the category where brand and compatibility matter most. Clipsal, HPM, Connected Switchgear, Zetr and Voltex all carry dimmer ranges, and each has its own guidance on lamp compatibility and minimum load.
The questions to ask are the same regardless of brand: what is the minimum load, which drivers are supported, and does the dimmer need a neutral. A 400W rating answers only the first of those, and only partially.
